Electronic Navigation Programs

Captain Ed has been using Electronic Navigation Programs since 1996 when he purchased the Navtrek Program that had just been released on floppy disks (remember those little things that you stuffed into the side of your computer which stored a BIG 144 kB, or is that pre-history for you?). Since then he has used many other programs for use with PCs as well as stand alone systems.

An absolute disqualification of any charting program is a limited number of restores for yourself in the event of a crash or computer replacement. Some well-known charting program only allows a limited number of restores. Captain Ed says stay away from that rip-off.

Here is a checklist of BB (Before Bloat) items he looks for in a charting program. After a few hours of viewing charts under difficult conditions (think of a dark night, off-shore, bouncing on pitching seas, trying to scroll the chart to match the land mass you see on your radar, then re-centering the chart back on the boat and its track), his Feature choices are highlighted in color.
