Rio Dulce
Marinas
We visited the marinas on the Rio Dulce in
February, 2001, to determine if we were going to leave our boat there for the
summer. We had heard both good and bad things about the area. Our
conclusion is that it is a nice place to keep a boat. You do have to be
sure to secure it properly against theft by locking dinghies, not leaving
valuables strewn around, and other common sense measures. Also it is
advisable to use precaution when traveling around, especially at night. There is
an excellent website, www.mayaparadise.com,
that has further information on the area.

We have not described any of the marina's in detail because it would be too large an effort to do this fairly for all marinas. Our time was limited on this trip. Suffice it to say that the marinas will be charging from $150 to $200 per boat for the summer of 2001. High usage electricity, e.g. for air conditioning, costs extra. Nearly all marinas have guards at night. Most have some kind of restaurant facility as well as places for cook-outs. Some have swiming pools. Docking is mostly by med-moor, which means you drop your anchor and back to the dock; although, some have side ties . When Hurricane Mitch came through several years ago, there was a lot of wind and rain, and the river level rose. But everyone said no boats were damaged. We would be interested in any further knowledge you may have on boating in the Rio Dulce area. Please contact us through our logbook or as shown on the cover page.
