Kara in Costa Rica

Here are pictures of our trip with Kathleen Murphy and Dale Moore from SV Karina D along with Kathleen's daughter Kara. Kara kept sending me emails asking when I would have pictures of our trip through Costa Rica on the website. Here, Kara, is a special page dedicated to you and our trip.
We had a great time with you!

Dale Moore and his wife Kathleen Murphy with Kathleen's daughter Kara Noseworthy. Three great companions that we had on our trip to San Jose, Volcan Arenal, and the Monte Verde Cloud Forest. Kathleen and Dale are real heros in the sailing community. They rescued Grant Moore from SV Koonawarra after it burned and sank off El Salvador. See their story in Stories from Our Trips elsewhere on this website. This picture was taken on the porch of our hotel in Monte Verde.
Climbing across the lava flow from the Arenal Volcano. The agile group from left to right: Norma, Kara, and Ed.
On the way up to the Arenal Volcano lava flow we stopped to get a lesson on the local botany. Kara, with her flowing hair, is at the far left. Norma is in the green shirt and Ed is way in the back.
Kara and Ed on a hanging bridge high above a gully in the Monte Verde Cloud Forest. It was very cool up here in the mountains while less than 10 miles away the tropic heat was above 90F.

Kara trying the Tarzan routine by sliding down a cable stretched across a valley near Monte Verde. It was supposed to be a jungle experience but we zipped so fast across the valley that there was no time to look for any wild animals. It is not part of the Cloud Forest preserve and is related more to Disneyland than to the Redwood National Forest.

Kara at one of the other traverses across the jungle valley. There were 12 cable slides from a few hundred feet to almost 1/4 mile long. The jungle ride is a development of some locals that want to cash in on the tourist trade that has come to see the Monte Verde Cloud Forest preserve.

Kara on the 7AM hike through the Monte Verde Cloud Forest. The reserve was set aside by the Quakers that founded the city. The purpose was to provide a habitat to save endangered animals and plants.

The resplendant Quetzal bird in the Monte Verde Cloud Forest. This is the national bird of Guatemala and used to be seen all over Central America. It is now an endangered species and can only be seen in very few places. It is difficult to locate because it blends in to the forest background. The body is about 12 inches long and with its long tail measures about 24 - 30 inches. It has a beautiful red breast with some white feathers in its tail. Truly a royal bird.
Kara on the dusty street leading in to Monte Verde. All the streets are dirt roads kept that way by the city fathers. The city was started by a small group of Quaker conscientious objectors after their release from jail in the USA. They settled in Monte Verde and started a cheese factory. The factory makes excellent cheeses and ice cream which we enjoyed sampling. They want to keep the roads primitive to discourage tourism but that has not stopped many busses from bringing them in.
Waiters singing Happy Birthday to Norma at a fancy restaurant in the hills above San Jose. Kara is on the left and Norma is on the right.
